Anchor of Promise #9
I love the Book of Proverbs. There is just so much instruction on how we are to live our life by trusting in God and fearing Him. The benefits from loving and fearing God are amazing and I wanted to make that today’s Anchor of Promise #9 The Benefits of Fearing God.
When we hear the word “fear” we automatically put a negative concept with it. Fearing the Lord is not a terror kind of fear. But rather it is a reverential awe of Who God says He is. When you “fear” the Lord, it is basically living your life in obedience to what He wants you to do. How do we know what He wants us to do? By reading the Bible and by faith believing and acting it out in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Proverbs 3:7,8- ” Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones.”
The fear of the Lord is the foundation for Godly Wisdom. When we fear the Lord we are putting our “will” aside for our lives and seeking the will He has for us. We are obedient and want only to please Him. The benefits of this “fear” will be the following:
Goodness, riches, honor and satisfaction(Psalm 31:19- Oh how great is your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You!” )
Right relationships with others. ( Leviticus 25:17- Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the Lord your God.)
Long life (Deuteronomy 6:2-that you may fear the Lord you God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life and that your days may be prolonged.)
Mercy- (Psalm 103:17- But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children.)
Strong confidence- (Proverbs 14:26-In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.)
And God’s constant Attention- (Psalm 34:7- The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him.)
What awesome promises right?! God wants to bless us greatly with these things and quite possibly many more that are in the Bible that I have not written out.
I encourage you today to seek to honor God with your actions, words, thoughts, and life. He promises so much to us when we fear Him. And this fear of Him is not a feeling that comes and goes, it is a steady day by day, action. It’s not one of those things we sometimes do like “well if I give money to the church, God will bless me” and we give out of a bad motive. When you understand the Holiness and Goodness that God has, you will only WANT to fear Him. It won’t be a chore on your check list.
As He changes our hearts over time, our fear and love for Him just grows and grows. The desires we once had or things we found pleasure in, no longer satisfy because we have gotten so close to the best source of satisfaction.
