Ephesians 2:4-5 “BUT GOD, who is rich in mercy, because of His GREAT LOVE with which He loved us, even where we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, by grace you have been saved.”
Today’s anchor is probably on my top 10 favorite promises God gives. I’d like to put out the definitions of the words used in this verse to help.
Mercy- (withholding judgement we deserve)
Grace- (giving good we don’t deserve)
I love how the verse starts out “BUT GOD”. These two words are almost like a sigh of relief. Because if you read the verses before it, the verdict was that we were all born into sin and must pay that sin debt in Hell. BUT GOD who is rich in mercy because of His great love, is willing to save you by GRACE. It is nothing we can do to get to Heaven and have our sins removed from us but to believe that Jesus paid it all for us on the cross.
God is always abounding in mercy. In fact Paul calls Him “rich” in mercy. It never runs out but overflows. God has never been burned out or sick and tired of giving out His mercy to you and I. Why is that? Why wouldn’t God put a limit on His mercy and grace after sin #100? Because of the next few words, “Because of His Great LOVE!” God loves us so much. (John 3:16) He is a Holy and just God. He has to punish sins, but He gave us a remedy for our sin. By asking Him for his Mercy and receive by faith His grace of what Jesus accomplished dying on the cross for our sin payment and rising again on the 3rd day.
If you believe this you are saved and are a child of God! (Romans 10:9- that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.)
God’s mercies are new everyday and He never withholds it from you and I!
My encouragement to you today is not to believe the lies of “God couldn’t forgive this sin” or “God doesn’t want to hear me ask for forgiveness again.” He can and will forgive your sins and empower you through the Holy Spirit to have victory over them next time! There is no sin that exceeds His mercy. If your sin was, then Jesus dying on the cross would be in vain. Be encouraged today that God is rich in Mercy and desires a close knit relationship with you! He wants to use you for great and mighty things!
