God help! Please!

I laugh when I read the title of this post because this was what my prayer life consisted of.

I’m not sure why my finite mind starts to think God stops helping me, but sometimes when we get into situations or make decisions we begin to doubt and just cry out HELP!

Do you have a decision you are trying to make on something that you don’t know if it is “God’s will” or not?

Currently in my life I have been reading so much on what Wisdom is. I tend to get excited about opportunities and just jump in or say YES and never really pray or seek God for Wisdom. It’s almost like a wife who, if she and her husband are on a tight budget, just goes and blows money without consulting with him if the purchase is okay to make..(i was guilty of this one!! lol) Now does she have to seek his approval over buying grapes or apples? Probably not so much..but when it comes to buying expensive clothes or home decor etc she may give him a call or text asking “Hey is our budget okay for me to purchase this?” and he will guide her with his answer. I am speaking on experience, my husband is my go-to for when I want to buy something, but need a yes or no.

Wisdom is the same way. When we are about to make a big decision or a small decision, we must ask God to give us our answer. God gives us wisdom (if we ask Him for it Proverbs 2) and we can make the best decision. We can make decisions quickly obviously if its smaller like buying gas. I have never stopped at a gas pump, got on my knees, and cried out to God to show me if getting gas is in His will..its common sense and wisdom tells me if I have the money to do it. But if I am embarking on a new career or buying a house etc I definitely need to be on my knees seeking His will and that comes into what we will talk on today! Seeking wisdom!

I love Proverbs because it constantly is speaking about how IMPORTANT it is for us that follow Jesus, to ask and seek Him for wisdom. Wisdom is not something you are born with..actually we are born with the complete opposite which Proverbs calls “folly” or “foolishness”. The writer of most of the Proverbs is King Solomon. He was the richest most successful King that ever lived in the Bible times. He talks about all he had and how much he had. The awesome thing about Solomon was God asked him what he wanted more than anything…did Solomon say “okay cool how about 1 million bricks of gold!” No we see his answer in 1 Kings 3:9 ” Therefore give your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil.” – Kings in those days were the ones that would give a final verdict on someone’s trial. So of course being a man after God, Solomon wanted to be wise in that job.

This pleased God so much not only did He give Solomon wisdom but he blessed him monetarily! (1 Kings 3:12-14)

King Solomon wrote many Proverbs dealing with Wisdom and the one I’d like to touch on today is just how to seek wisdom.

Proverbs 2 is an amazing tool for understanding just what Wisdom is and how to acquire it.

There are 3 times he uses the word “if” verse 1, 3,4 “My son IF you…” So here we can see there are requirements! And the promise of Wisdom is seen in verse 5. “Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and Find the knowledge of God.”

What is the fear of the Lord? We see later on in Proverbs 9:10- The fear of the Lord is the beginning (or prerequisite) of Wisdom.” The fear of the Lord is not a scared or bewildered type of fear..but a reverential and of honor outlook of Who God is. Knowing what He likes and detests. So it is a daily learning of who God is! As you grow to see yourself in light of who He is, your honor and reverential fear of God will grow more and more.

To seek wisdom on an opportunity sometimes can take a few months or even a year! Or at times God can give you wisdom on the decision quickly. Seeking God for Wisdom is something that has to be done everyday. It’s not just for when a decision has to be made or when problems arise. “Wisdom involves openness, retention, hearing, applying, requesting, and diligent searching. It takes EFFORT to become wise.”- The Bible Knowledge Commentary.

It is a gift of God ( Proverbs 2:6- ” For the Lord gives wisdom;”), and having such knowledge leads to the most fulfilling joy and pleasure you can experience in your heart.

So if you are experiencing a very stressful decisionwoman-praying-silhoutte making process right now, stop trying to control the outcome. Jesus will give you wisdom if you truly will seek Him for it and ask each day. As you seek Him through prayer and His word, your relationship and love for Him will grow larger and you’ll only want to honor HIM and not yourself or others with your decisions. Your purposes, desires, goals, etc will change as you grow to love Jesus more than yourself and your “life”.

I hope and pray this encouraged you today to seek out wisdom more than silver and gold. To seek out what the Lord has created you for and to use those talents for HIM! He will bless you beyond your wildest dreams in wisdom, joy, etc when you do things right for Him and give Him the Glory for it all! I want to leave you with this promise of what God says about gaining wisdom:

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver and her gain than fine Gold. She is more precious than rubies; and all the things you may desire CANNOT compare with her.” – Proverbs 3:13-15
